Canonical unveiled Ubuntu for the smartphone today, bringing the popular Linux-based PC operating system to the smartphone. The Ubuntu phone OS will allow for gestures from all edges of the screen to switch between apps and move between content quickly. It will also have voice and text commands, HTML5 apps, as well as global search for “apps, content and products”. Engadget says any phone with “at least a dual Cortex-A9 cores, a gig of RAM and 800 x 400 resolution” can run the new OS and that a Galaxy Nexus build should be out within the next few weeks.
Canonical says true Ubuntu phones will launch in early 2014.
