Apple releases iOS 6.1.1 beta 1

Apple released iOS 6.1.1 beta 1 to developers today via the iOS Developer Center. The release appears to be relatively minor and it only looks to bring big Map improvements to users in Japan. Here are the release notes thanks to 9to5mac:

iOS 6.1.1 beta 1 includes the following improvements to Maps for Japan:

  •  Improved pronunciation of roads during turn-by-turn navigation
  • Optimized directions to more strongly prefer highways over narrower roads
  • Now indicates upcoming toll roads during turn-by-turn navigation
  • Added labels for junctions, interchanges, on-ramps, off-ramps, and intersections
  • Added indicators for transit station buildings, subway lines, and traffic lights
  • Updated freeway color to green
  • Updated icons for some location categories including fire stations, hospitals, and post offices
  • Added 3D buildings including Tokyo Station, Japan Imperial Palace, and Tokyo Tower

It’s unclear whether the update includes any other improvements or patches, such as a patch for the “evasi0n” jailbreak which was released Monday. iH8sn0w on Twitter says the update is labeled as a beta but does not include an expiration date / timer (which would cause it to expire) like past betas. This could be to prevent last-minute beta releases to avoid a beta expiring on developers which almost happened with iOS 6.1 beta 4 (before the release of what was beta 5). iOS 6.1 beta 5 also did not include an expiration date but it ended up being the same build released to the public.
